Description
March 8th is International Women's Day. From today 'til then, I'll be sketching female characters from various games, books, comics and such whose stories have impacted and influenced my life. You can consider these my recommendation for powerful female characters to look up and learn about.
Day 4 — Ilisidi, from C.J. Cherryh's Foreigner series.
Ilisidi of Malguri is the most powerful woman on her home planet. A true conservative (not by our standards, per se, but by the literal definition of "conservation"), Ilisidi spent decades wrangling to become to most powerful Ateva (her species) period, going to such measures as to have her husband assassinated, and possibly her son as well (this is debated). A storied career of political murders aside, Ilisidi is largely benevolent; she guards zealously what she knows must be protected, using any means at her considerable disposal. In her old age, she battles her much more progressive grandson (the most powerful Ateva on the planet) on issues of environmentalism and social change. However negative the rest of this may seem, Ilisidi is one of my all-time favorite characters — it's hard to describe her in a positive light out of context, but trust me on this. She's controlling, manipulative, and sometimes comes off as downright tyrannical.. but if an Ateva could be described as having a Heart of Gold (they really can't, but it's about as close as human terms can get) it's certainly Ilisidi.
